Welcome to the Isle of Purbeck Arts Club
History of the Art Club
The Isle of Purbeck Arts Club began life in 1947, at a time when Britain was recovering from the war which had decimated so many towns and ruined so many lives. It was felt that involvement in The Arts could boost morale and the Government at the time supported the idea with some modest grants through the Arts Council.
At one time the club boasted 500 members, but the world has changed, and our leisure time is spent very differently. However, the Club survives, with fewer members, but still with the same aims – to nurture interest in the arts and to provide grants from the income from funds set up some years ago to support young artists and students of music.
The Club Now
The Isle of Purbeck Arts Club is now a registered charity, centred in Swanage, that organises and supports a variety of arts based activities for all to enjoy. From painting to poetry, outings to bursaries, or even just socialising with like-minded people, the club has something on offer for everyone. The club also funds tutored art workshops from time to time, but mutual support is the foundation. All abilities are welcome to join or to exhibit in our summer art exhibition.
