Purbeck Instrument Loan Scheme
What is P.I.L.S.?
Purbeck Instrument Loan Scheme, which was established in 2000, loans orchestral instruments to children living or attending school in Purbeck (Swanage, Wareham and surrounding villages) but not including percussion instruments, guitars or pianos. At the Committee’s discretion, grants may be available to help with lesson costs in some circumstances, and also exam fees.
PILS organise termly concerts for young players to develop their performance skills as well as offering the more advanced players a chance to perform and inspire the younger players at the start of their musical journey.
PILS works closely with Purbeck Youth Music to provide instruments for children during school presentations by professional musicians and for beginner starter groups.
Swanage Big Band was set up by PILS 5 years ago with finance provided by The Swanage Jazz Club, with the aim of introducing young people to jazz styles and improvisation. Led by trombonist Gary Austin, the band has both adult and youth players, and they meet once a month at the United Reformed Church.
Instruments available on loan are: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba.
To borrow an instrument from PILS you need to be a Junior Member of the Arts Club, which cost £3.00 a year and is included in the annual £23.00 loan fee.
